The “House of History” in Thalgau, designed by SBW-director Bernhard Iglhauser, is a small but wonderful project to document and present the history of the town of Thalgau in a vivid and interactive way. The Brunnbach river has always divided the village into two parts. The connecting link between both sides was the “Brunnbachbrücke” (Brunnbach-bridge), and already Ignaz von Kürsinger in 1833 renovated and took care of this bridge. The last construction and renovations were supervised by Eugene Reindls, a genius regarding wood and water constructions.
Today, the Brunnbach river is covered due to the construction of the new market-place and instead of the bridge there is a modern bus stop to mark the historic link between the two parts of the town. However, this bus stop is not just any bus stop but an architectural masterpiece, a beautiful and well thought-out house with a curved roof, glass walls and seating areas. On the interior ceiling a variety of photographs are arranged next to each other which re-creates the »old Thalgau« and offers every visitor the opportunity to dive into the past and learn more about ancient Thalgau. Furthermore, there is a screen inside the bus stop where one can access more information about each building of »old Thalgau«. Simply press the respective button and you will receive in-depth information on the name of the house, its former use, to whom it belonged etc.

The Thalgauer parish church was consecrated to Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours, and had 7 predecessor churches built in this same place. In excavations traces were discovered of the earliest church dating back the 8th century. The present Baroque hall church was built between 1745 and 1755 and in the western part it has still retained the inicial baroque interior. From the Gothic church remains the foundation of the tower and the baptismal font and the sculptures of holy Joseph and Mary are preserved from the preceding century.
The high altar has as a main picture the St. Martin, who is the church’s patron. On both sides stand the patron saints of the Diocese, St. Rupert and St. Virgil and above, surrounded by angels, lies the God father. In the Thalgauer parish church you will also find the altar of the Scapulier Brotherhood located on the right side and on the left side the altar of the Corpus Christi Brotherhood. On the south wall you can see the Georg Altar and on the north wall the Anna Altar.

The fire brigade Thalgau is one of the oldest fire brigades in the province of Salzburg – founded on September 2nd, 1878. The rich history of the volunteer firefighters is presented in the fire brigade museum. Questions such as:
• How can fire be extinguished earlier?
• What did the firemen wear?
• How did the first syringes work?
are explained vividly.

Historic Mill & Museum
On the hiking trail around the Fuschel lake in a charming setting you can find the 16th century Hundsmarktmühle. It was first mentioned in 1570 as “Mühle am Geilnbach”. In 1989, the property was acquired by the town of Thalgau and restored to a museum and a versatile events’ venue. The museum focuses on the topic “From grain to bread” but also the local history of Thalgau is documented in specifically designated rooms.
Yearly changing exhibitions and various educational programs make a visit to the museum always a new experience. Moreover, it houses the special exhibition within the framework of the Thalgauer educational week.
The museum is open from June to October every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm with service.
Group tours of 15 people or more are available any time upon request by phone. Admission is free!
Fuschler Straße, 5303 Thalgau
The chapel “Zum guten Hirten” was built in Thalgauegg in 1987/88 by the architect, sculptor and painter Johann Weyringer. It is a contribution of the Province of Salzburg to foster the promotion of art near Salzburg.
This chapel is a monument that not only stimulates you to think but also wants you to remember something, here specifically the message of the good shepherd. It is a place that creates an atmosphere, where you can calm down, reflect or indulge in spiritual thoughts, which has become more and more difficult in our times. This chapel takes the visitor into a world of faith.
Thalgauberg, 5303 Thalgau
This church, the oldest wooden church in Austria, is located in the north of Thalgau at the top of the Kolomans Mountain. Actually, it is situated on the grounds of the neighbouring town Tiefgraben, but the access is only possible from Thalgau. The church is a remarkable shrine as it is the last completely preserved, pure wooden church in Austria.
Saint Koloman was considered the saint of the simple people, the peasants and the travellers. Moreover, the cattle but also springs and wells were entrusted to him and his protection. He was an Irish prince, who travelled once through Austria on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and at Kolomannsberg he made a stop to rest. As a result, there originated a source, “the Kolomansbründl”.
Pfarrhofallee 7, 5303 Thalgau
The presbytery, since 1812 called “Dechanthof”, lies about one kilometer northeast of the town center at the foot of the Thalgau Mountain. A marble relief stone in the corridor is reminiscent of a fundamental reconstruction under the priest Wolfgang Haberl in 1583.
From 1754 to 1755 priest J. G. Griennagel gave the order and the financial funds to build a new chapel in honour of the holy Cross and St. Mary Magdalene, and also designated it as his future grave. This new chapel has a two-aisled hall building with a narrowly curved choir.
Above the western gable rises a roof turret with an octagonal top and an onion dome. The interior is overarched by engraved tunnel vaults and decorated with various rococo stuccoes (rocaille, palm branches, grid fields).

In a picturesque location on the western slope of the Schober Mountain lie the ruins of the castle Wartenfells, built on a a rock at 1020 m above the sea level.
The castle was built by Konrad von Kahlham in 1259. From 1267 onwards, Konrad acquired for himself the name “von Wartenfels”, that appears on all documents since then. In 1301 the castle was sold to the archbishop of Salzburg, who arranged a regional court of justice on Wartenfels, which ruled over the whole area of Thalgau, Faistenau, Fuschl and Abersee. Towards the end of the 16th century these court officals moved to Thalgau as a result of the construction of a court building in the town. This marked the starting point of the decay of the castle. Nevertheless, in the first half of the nineteenth century there were still considerable parts of all external walls preserved. In 1981, the brittle building was secured and lightly restored so that the ruins nowadays are still largely preserved. From the forester house you can reach the ruins of Wartenfels in only 20 minutes. In case of uncertain weather conditions a visit is not recommended.

The Thalaguna pool spoils its guests with a large pool, buffet, heated swimming pool and a large natural pool. The 5 m deep natural pool is kept clean thanks to fish and the guests can enjoy the fresh water from the Fuschler Ache that is flowing into this pool. For the little ones, there is a playground, as well as children’s and baby’s pool.
There are also various sporting and leisure facilities nearby.

The Minigolf course is located near the sports and recreation center, directly at the swimming pool Thalaguna. It has a total of 18 tracks.
The mini golf course can be used free of charge. Rackets and balls are deposited in a box. We ask you to take good care of the materials.

The climbing tower is located in the school sports hall and is operated by the Alpenverein Thalgau.
At 19,80 m altitude, this climbing facility is one of the highest in the region of Flachgau.
On 340 m² climbing area, 30 routes are screwed into the walls, differing in degrees of difficulty from II to IX. The facility is perfect for children, beginners as well as professionals.
The Alpenverein focuses on youth and children training. In addition to the general climbing rules, they teach rope techniques, knot knowledge and improvement of personal climbing skills.

The Curling club was founded in 1994 and in May 1998, the opening of the new curling sports hall was celebrated. It is used in summer as well as in winter. Today, the club belongs to one of the most powerful ones in the federal state of Salzburg. Next to striving for high-level athleticism, the club places great importance on forming the youth in curling. The club invites all interested ones to come by and try curling out!

Tickets can be purchased at the cash machine at the Wasenmoos stop, directly at the beginning of the cross-country ski trail and at the tourism office in Thalgau.
