Welcome to Thalgau,
the gateway to the Salzkammergut!

Talgove – one of the oldest settlements in the country – was already documented in year 700 when the Bajuwar Duke Theodebert gave it to Hochstift Salzburg. In the 13th century the castle Wartenfels was built on a rock on the west slope of the Schober Mountain. Today, the picturesque market town with nearly 6,000 inhabitants convinces by its unique location. The charming Thalgau is located on the Salzkammergut cycling path, surrounded by the Salzkammergut lakes and only 18 km from the festival city of Salzburg. Due to the good road connections to the A1 this city can be quickly reached.

Thalgau – one place – many perspectives

The Schober Mountain measuring an altitude of 1,328 m above sea level, the Kolomansberg or Thalgauberg invite you to be active at any time of the year! – For hiking passionates we recommend doing for example an excursion to the Kolomanschurch, the oldest preserved wooden church of Austria or to the ruins of Wartenfels. If you are up for a more exhaustive hike, we suggest climbing to the peak of the Schober Moutain for instance.

Are you passionate about cross-country skiing? Then the Thalgauberg is what you are looking for. Perfectly traced slopes, an integrated competition loop and even a floodlight track, to ski in the dark!

If you are looking for variety, you do not have to look very far. On the 10 km long hiking trail around the Fuschlsee, you can explore the idyllic surroundings and enjoy the green and untouched nature. On the way, you will also pass by the Hundsmarktmühle, dating from the 16th century. Today it is a versatile cultural and events location with its own museum. Thalgau is not only a traditional, cultural town, but also since 2010 the venue for the annual Worldcup in parachute-target jumping, which attracts avid sportsmen from all around the globe.
